RECIPE: Kerala Jackfruit Sweet with Jaggery (Chakka Varattiyathu)

Updated: Jun 24, 2021

This delicious sweet is a traditional Kerala dessert.

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 2 cups fresh jackfruit, chopped

  2. 1.5 cups SaveAGram jaggery

  3. 1 tablespoon ghee

  4. Coconut milk (optional)

METHOD:

  1. Cook the jackfruit with a bit of water, then blend.

  2. In an iron wok, melt jaggery with 1/5 cup water and boil a bit for 10 mins.

  3. Add blended jackfruit to melted jaggery. Stir and cook for 15 mins.

  4. Add 1 tablespoon ghee

  5. Cook until it looks dark and leaves the sides of the iron wok.

  6. For a “tighter” sweet, keep it a bit longer on the fire. Our version has a more jam-like consistency

  7. Eat as a dessert. You can also add coconut milk (optional).
